Less is more in retention war

Less is more in retention war

Who'd want to be a partner these days? What with various hearings this summer it seems partnership is a poisoned chalice.

With partnership comes a wad of cash (ask any Slaughter and May partner) and a great pension (ask Peter Bloxham), but also great responsibility (ask Barry O'Brien).

So congrats to 14 lawyers at Ashurst who have just been promoted to counsel positions (see story): all the benefits of a promotion from the associate body without all the hassle of being a partner.

Ashurst of course has been at the vanguard of revamping its lawyers' career paths, including overhauling outdated lockstep systems for its associates, and even its partners. It has been argued that lockstep systems are discriminatory, which takes us neatly back to hearings involving partners.
